DENT VICINITY BURIALS

There is no known cemetery at Dent. However, during the years there have been several burials on family homesteads or places.

Before Dworshak Dam went in and flooded this area, many graves were moved to higher ground.
The Ove and Storholt families moved their loved ones to the Sanders Cemetery.

The small community of Dent was established in the late 1800's. Before the dam was built, which created Dworshak Resevoir, it was 17 miles
up the North Fork of the Cleartwater River from Ahsahka, Idaho. The postoffice was started in 1896 and named Dent after Charles Dent,
an early postmaster. The postoffice operated until 1954. He and his wife Katherine owned and operated a way station called "Travelers Rest"
shown below. They are buried elsewhere. When the Dent's moved, Richard and Maybelle Ove ran the post office.

Richard Jermand Ove came to the Dent area around 1905. He married Maybelle Beverly in Spokane in 1911 and they moved to Dent in 1913.
On December 31, 1924 Maybelle Ove was appointed postmaster of Dent. In October 1939 Richard Ove was appointment postmaster of Dent.
They lived across the North Fork of the Clearwater River from Dent and they would row a boat across the river to manage the post office. They were
postmasters until 1954 when the post office was closed down. The Ove's had five children: Richard 1911, a stillborn daughter 1913,
Rosamond 1914, Ruth 1917 and Freya in 1920.

Ira Thurman Sayler and Gladys Blanchard were married in Orofino in 1916. They lived in Dent until about 1945.
They had four children: Theodore 1911, Clara 1917, John 1918 and Amanda 1922.

James Preston Simmons and his wife, Grace Edna Clark, moved to the Dent area in July 1913. They lived in the Dent area until about 1925 at which
time they moved to Chelan, Washington. The Simmons had nine children: Ruth 1912, Pearl 1913, Walter 1916, Infant daughter 1918,
Benjamin 1919, James 1921, Allen 1924, Leslie 1927 and Harold 1932.

Myron Martin Zimmerman came to the Dent area around 1910. He married Eula Jackson in 1918 and they made their home in Dent. They lived in
Dent until shortly after 1940. The Zimmerman's had five children: May 1920, Bertha 1922, Infant Son 1923, Ada 1926 and Bonnie 1934.
The Elk Creek School House, District #16 was on Zimmerman land, right near the main road going up the North Fork of the Clearwater River.
